Bryan Carter’s essay The Silencing Engine crossed my feed today and I had to read it and share.
Bryan’s stimulating essay about the ways LLM chatbots are designed to respond to us mirror certain trauma response left me troubled. It dovetails with my concerns about how AI sets impossible expectations for young people about how social interactions should go, what responses are authentic and useful and beneficial. But it explores a number of questions about LLMs and chatbots in relation to trauma that I, because of the life I’ve experienced, would not think to ask.
We’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the social impact of AI. This explores below the surface.
