One of the greatest losses in the education and edtech space, to my mind, is the failure of the “edutainment” software industry. I periodically get upset about the fact that it basically disappeared overnight, and the same kind of game is not being developed today. There’s no shortage of edtech products and platforms, libraries and tools. The end of edutainment – and the fall of The Learning Company, the crown jewel of edutainment in the 90s – wasn’t a natural evolution of the industry, though. It was brought about by greed, and orchestrated by one of my least favourite fellow Canadians.
The Outline published a great summary way back in 2018, and I stumbled across it this week.
